You might have noticed callouts like Newsletter (in the left side bar) and the Community Poll (in the right side bar) in your Magento pages. they are more visible when you have a 3-column layout. Even without coding, you can remove these callouts from you template.

Go to:
System -> Configuration

Click on Advance Settings. Then on the content, you might have to click on the Disable module outputs to show the content.
Go Down to Mage_Newsletter (newsletter callout) and Mage_Poll (Community Poll callout) and on their dropdowns, choose disable. Then Save …

To change this is quite simple. Log in as Admin, then go to:
System -> Configuration-> Design -> Header
See the “Welcome Text” field. Just change the value and “Save Config”. It will change the header text.
